MULLEN'S FOLLY

Restoration of an early 18th century log house in Cecil County, Maryland.  Dated to 1789, and could possibly be even earlier!

Restoration of Mullen's Folly

Mullen's Folly is a log house in Northeastern Cecil County, Maryland  near the outskirts of an 18th century village called Calvert.  Not much of the buildings history is known before 1788.  In 1788 the house was sold off of the property of Hebron's Gift, a 1739 brick house down the street to William Mullen.  William Mullen operated a store out of this building until his death around 1817, although it is likely that his two son in laws took the store over for him around 1810.  William Mullen would leave the property to his grandson George W. Kirk in 1817.  George would run the store with his father Elisha until Elisha passes in 1823.  The house changed hands a few times between Elizabeth Underhill, and the Pierson family.  James Trimble purchased the property in 1846.  His half brother Ellis Goldsmith Chandlee likely lived in the house as a caretaker of the Rosebank property.  By 1859 the cemetery had no use for the house and it was to be destroyed.  The Berriker family who were caretakers of the Brick Meeting House next door purchased the building for $200 to live in and remain as caretakers for the Meetinghouse.  Mullen's Folly remained in the Berriker-Fitzgerald family until June of 2022 when I purchased it.  Now I am beginning the restoration and preservation of this incredible and early structure to return it to its early 18th century appearance.  The process can be followed on Facebook at "Mullens Folly Restoration" or Instagram at mullens_folly_restoration
